Statement by Wilmington City Council on Decision to Hold Vote on Curfew Ordinance

Wilmington, DE (June 15, 2017) Wilmington City Council issued the following statement in response to yesterday’s gun violence:

“It’s important that Wilmington Police and their law enforcement partners have access to as many tools as possible to curb gun violence and other criminal activities, and we believe strongly that enforcement of the City’s curfew will help get us there.

We all know that when children are on the streets late at night without proper supervision, they are more likely to either become the perpetrators or the victims of violent crime. We believe the curfew legislation will be another much needed tool to help reduce the number of juveniles on the streets at night, while furthering a commitment to provide more services for young people we know are vulnerable.

However, understanding the complexities of this issue as well as the ongoing collaboration and coordination necessary to identify a host facility and ensure the appropriate allocation of resources and access to services – the curfew legislation has been held in the Education, Youth & Families Committee.

In the coming weeks, we will be meeting with the administration, Police Chief Tracy, and other stakeholders to ensure that we pass the best legislation possible to protect our children, reduce crime, and make our communities safer.”
