Statement by Wilmington City Council on Attempted Shooting of Officers

Wilmington, DE (August 25, 2017) Wilmington City Council issued the following statement in response to yesterday’s gun violence:

“Yesterday evening, officers with the Wilmington Police Department and the State of Delaware Probation and Parole were met with gunfire while investigating a suspicious person. Fortunately, no officers were injured, though the suspect remains at large.

City Council strongly condemns this act of violence, and this blatant disregard for human life and public safety. We stand with our Wilmington Police officers, and their colleagues in law enforcement, and our thoughts are with those officers involved in this harrowing experience.

We implore members of the Wilmington community to come forward if they have information about the individual responsible for this incident. And we ask that residents be mindful and understanding that, as this investigation continues, law enforcement officers working in our community could be at a heightened state of alert. Please be understanding and follow instructions, especially as investigators might be conducting additional stops or asking questions as they continue their investigation.

Incidents like this underscore the importance of not only providing our law enforcement partners with the tools and resources they need, but also the importance of implementing the recommendations of the CDC Community Advisory Council – to address the root causes of this epidemic – as a vital and viable component of the overall strategy to reduce gun-related violence in Wilmington.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Wilmington Police Det./Sgt. Barry Mullins at 302-576-3633. Additionally, those with information can contact the Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or via email at www.delawarecrimestoppers.org.  Citizens can also TEXT a tip to NIXLE at 888-777.”
