Councilman James Spadola to Honor Wilmington’s Crossing Guards for Their Dedication to Student Safety and Community Service
Special recognition ceremony on November 5 will celebrate the everyday heroes who help protect Wilmington’s children and families.
Wilmington, DE – Every school day, rain or shine, Wilmington’s crossing guards stand at neighborhood intersections with one important mission: ensuring that children travel safely to and from school. In recognition of their dedication, Wilmington City Council Member James Spadola (At-Large) will host a special recognition ceremony on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. in Wilmington City Council Chambers, honoring the men and women who serve as crossing guards throughout the City of Wilmington.
The evening will begin with dinner at 5:30 p.m., followed by a recognition ceremony at 6:30 p.m. The event will take place on the first floor of the Louis L. Redding City/County Building, located at 800 N. French Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
For Councilman Spadola, the recognition is an opportunity to shine a spotlight on individuals whose daily contributions often go unnoticed but whose presence makes a lasting difference in the lives of Wilmington’s children, parents, and neighborhoods.
“Our crossing guards do a lot more than help kids get to school safely,” said Councilman Spadola. “They’re out there every morning, no matter the weather, and they always seem to have a smile on their faces. They get to know the kids, the parents, and the neighbors, and their positive attitudes make everyone’s morning a little better. They’re a really important part of our neighborhoods, and I’m glad we’re taking the time to recognize them.”
Crossing guards play an essential role in protecting students and supporting pedestrian safety throughout Wilmington. Often serving as familiar and trusted faces in their neighborhoods, they provide reassurance to parents, encourage safe walking practices, and help create a welcoming environment for students as they begin and end their school days.
Their commitment also reflects the importance of community service and the powerful difference individuals can make through small, consistent acts of care and responsibility.
Councilman Spadola hopes the ceremony will serve as a meaningful reminder that building a safer, stronger Wilmington requires recognizing those who quietly serve the community every day.
“When we talk about making Wilmington a better place to live and raise a family, we must recognize the people who help make that possible,” Councilman Spadola continued. “Our crossing guards are looking out for our children. This evening is about saying thank you, celebrating their service, and reminding them that the Wilmington community stands behind them. I look forward to personally recognizing these remarkable individuals for everything they do.”
The recognition ceremony will bring together crossing guards and community members for an evening of appreciation, fellowship, and acknowledgment of the important role these dedicated public servants play in keeping Wilmington’s neighborhoods safe.
