President Shabazz Elected to National League of Cities’ Board of Directors; Concludes Term as President of National Black Caucus

Wilmington, Del. At the National League of Cities’ (NLC) 2017 City Summit, held this past week in Charlotte, NC, Wilmington City Council President Dr. Hanifa Shabazz was elected to a two-year term as an At-Large member on the League’s Board of Directors. President Shabazz’s board nomination was endorsed by all five NLC Constituency Groups: Asian Pacific American Municipal Officials (APAMO), Hispanic Elected Local Officials (HELO), Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Local Officials (LGBTLO), Women in Municipal Government (MIMG) and National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO).

“I’m honored to represent Wilmington,” said President Shabazz. “I look forward to working collaboratively with my colleagues from across the country to enhance and strengthen NLC’s visibility and reach in support of our nation’s cities and their leaders.”

Prior to being elected to the board, President Shabazz concluded her one-year term as President of NLC’s National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO). During last week’s NBC-LEO luncheon, President Shabazz passed the gavel to President-Elect Wayne Messam, Mayor of Miramar, Florida and officially transferred the duties of the Presidency at the NLC Board of Director’s meeting on Saturday, November 18th.

“It has been a privilege to serve as President of NBC-LEO,” said President Shabazz. “Over the past year, we have made significant strides toward mobilizing and amplifying the national dialogue around concerns specific to the African American community. I’m confident that this important work will continue under the leadership of President-Elect Wayne Messam.”

The National League of Cities, established in 1924, is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities and serves as a resource and advocate for more than 19,000 municipalities throughout the country. The League works to advocates for cities and towns and influence federal policy in Washington, D.C. and provides numerous programs and services to help keep city officials informed of important issues and ideas.

The National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials is the largest constituency group of NLC responsible for increasing African American participation on NLC’s steering and policy committees to ensure that policy and program recommendations reflect African American concerns and benefit their communities.
