Mayor Purzycki and 3rd District Council Member Oliver Rededicate Youth Playground at Brown Burton Winchester Park

Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki and 3rd District Council Member Zanthia Oliver were joined today by Council President Hanifa Shabazz and Council Member Ciro Adams for a ceremony officially dedicating a new youth playground at Brown Burton Winchester Park at 23rd and North Locust Streets in the city’s northeast section. The $375,000 playground renovation was funded through the City’s Parks and Recreation Capital Budget. Council Member Oliver, who credited former Council Member Darius Brown for his efforts to renovate the play area, hosted today’s event in her district.

The renovation of the play space included the removal and grading of the existing playground, poured-in-place and engineered wood fiber safety surfacing, and installation of colorful new equipment, including a climbing apparatus and swing sets for toddlers and school-aged children. The existing basketball court was also upgraded with new color coating, polycarbonate backboards and goals, and new player benches. New picnic tables and benches were installed nearby, and some repairs were made to sidewalks near the site, as well.

Geoff Anderson of Robinson Anderson Sommers Landscape Architects Inc. designed and engineered the project. Liberty Parks supplied playground equipment, table, benches, and basketball backboards and goals. Greenlane of South Jersey, Inc. completed all site demolition, site excavation, drainage installation and installation of equipment.

This new playground area is another in a series of new parks projects announced recently by the City which includes the City’s partnership with West Side Grows Together on renovations at parks at 4th and Rodney Streets and 3rd and Connell Streets. Those projects are scheduled to be complete during the summer.
