During Wilmington City Council’s Regular Meeting on Thursday, April 17, 2025, a powerful moment of appreciation and unity unfolded as 3rd District Councilwoman Zanthia Oliver and 6th District Councilwoman Yolanda McCoy formally recognized the Wilmington Fire Department’s Gallant Blazers for their outstanding dedication to both their profession and their community.

Through their commitment to fostering diversity and equity, the Blazers play a pivotal role in promoting interracial progress within the department. Their work ensures that minority representation in firefighting is not only sustained but empowered, through recruitment, retention, and advancement opportunities. By inspiring minority firefighters to rise through the ranks, the Blazers help shape a more inclusive future for emergency services in Wilmington.

Their impact, however, stretches far beyond the walls of the firehouse. The Gallant Blazers are deeply rooted in community engagement, spearheading initiatives that uplift individuals and families across generations. Programs like Gainful Employment, which provides free EMT certification training, open doors for those seeking meaningful careers in emergency services. Their Suit-Up campaign makes a bold and inspiring statement as members show up at schools dressed in suits and uniforms during the first week of class, motivating students to start the year with confidence and determination.

They haven’t forgotten the city’s elders either. Through initiatives like Bingo with the Blazers and Adopt a Senior for Thanksgiving, they offer meaningful connection, care, and companionship to seniors who have spent their lives giving to the community. And during the holiday season, their generous contributions to Toys for Tots and the Community Turkey Giveaway ensure that no family is left behind. The Gallant Blazers have even coordinated community-focused events like 76’er Night Out, which offers critical support for fire victims.

Councilwoman Oliver, the sponsor of the resolution, emphasized the importance of honoring individuals and organizations that go above and beyond for their community. “The Gallant Blazers embody what it means to serve with heart. Their tireless efforts, both in and out of uniform, speak volumes about their character, their courage, and their compassion.”

The resolution concluded with a powerful sentiment: “Job Well Done.” It is more than a phrase, it is a recognition of a higher calling. The Gallant Blazers are not only firefighters, they are mentors, advocates, role models, and above all, servants of the people.
