Council President-elect Hanifa Shabazz Receives Another Title of President as Head of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials

Shabazz will serve a one-year term for a national organization that represents the interests of 213 individuals in 40 states

Wilmington City Council President-elect Hanifa Shabazz was elected to another position of President yesterday when she took the reins of a national organization which represents the interests of elected black officials from around the United States. At the National League of Cities (NLC) Annual Summit which is underway through Saturday in Pittsburgh, Shabazz was elected as President of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials, also known as NBC LEO.

NBC LEO was created in 1970 to represent the interests of African American elected officials through their participation on the National League of Cities steering and policy committees ensuring that policy and program recommendations reflect African American concerns that benefit their communities. The organization keeps members informed about issues and helps them devise ways to achieve their community objectives through legislation and direct action.

Shabazz, who will take office as Wilmington’s first elected female and African American Council President on January 3, said she is honored to lead NBC LEO. Shabazz said that while her role is to lead and assist elected officials from around the country, the real benefit as far as public service comes from learning about government programs that have been implemented around the United States that can help her home constituency in Wilmington.

“Over the years, my involvement with the NLC and NBC LEO has allowed me to bring home programs that benefit Wilmington citizens,” said Shabazz. “They include Wilmington’s new, affordable sewer and water line warranty plan that will save property owners thousands of dollars should a sewer or water line rupture, Wilmington’s Youth Leadership Commission to give a voice to younger citizens and a drug savings plan that can trim the cost of prescription drugs,” said Shabazz. “We learn by sharing and I am happy to lead an organization that promotes innovative and outstanding public service through serving in elective office.”
