A proposed long-term lease granting Salesianum School the authority to renovate, manage and maintain the City’s Baynard Stadium sports facility will be reviewed publicly on Monday. First District City Council Member Nnamdi Chukwuocha, who chairs the Council’s Education, Youth and Families Committee, is urging the public to step forward and offer comments on the proposal before Council votes on the lease which could be as soon as the November 17 council meeting.

The Monday, November 14 committee meeting, which is a joint meeting with the Council’s Public Safety Committee, will convene at 5 p.m. in the Council Committee Room on the first floor of the Louis L. Redding City/County Building at 800 North French Street in Wilmington.

An Ordinance was introduced at the Council’s November 3 meeting which would authorize the Williams Administration to enter into a 50-year lease (with an option for an additional 50 years) so Salesianum School could complete an estimated $15 million to $20 million renovation of Baynard Stadium and then serve as the maintenance manager and operator of the stadium. The Ordinance is sponsored by City Council President Theo Gregory. Ten other council members have signed on as co-sponsors of the legislation.

Salesianum School is expected to complete, within five years, a major renovation of the stadium including a new field with synthetic turf, bleachers, running track, scoreboard, lighting, bathrooms, locker rooms and concessions. The lease stipulates that all of the schools that currently use the stadium would retain their rights to continue scheduling their sporting events at the facility, and that the track shall remain open to the public as it is currently.  In addition, the lease stipulates that Salesianum must work with other community-based organizations to develop ways in which these groups will have the opportunity to use the stadium.
