Councilwoman Zanthia Oliver Announces the 5th Annual 3rd District ‘Millie Cannon’ Summer Concert
A Celebration of Jazz Legends in Wilmington is set for Saturday, August 23, from 12 Noon – 7:00 PM, at Brown-Burton Winchester Park.

Wilmington, DE – The City of Wilmington is set to come alive with the vibrant sounds of jazz as Councilwoman Zanthia Oliver proudly invites everyone to the 5th Annual 3rd District ‘Millie Cannon’ Summer Concert on Saturday, August 23, 2025. This free, family-friendly event will be held at Brown-Burton Winchester Park, located at 26th and Locust Streets, from noon until 7 p.m.

The annual event is a community tradition honoring the life, music, and legacy of Millie Cannon. Known for her captivating performances and deep connection to the community, Cannon helped shape Wilmington’s jazz scene, a legacy that continues to inspire new generations of musicians. Cannon is a Wilmington jazz icon who performed alongside the legendary Clifford Brown and was the sister of famed vibraphonist Lem Winchester, for whom Brown-Burton Winchester Park is named.

“Millie Cannon was not only a gifted musician but a powerful force in our city’s cultural history,” said 3rd District Councilwoman Zanthia Oliver. “I remain committed to supporting local and national jazz players so that the music can be enjoyed for generations to come. Don’t miss this chance to experience the legacy of Millie Cannon and the incredible talent that continues to keep jazz alive in our city.”

This year, the celebration will also include a special tribute to Millie Cannon’s brother, Norman Wilkerson, who was a beloved community member who lived across from the park and left his own mark in the music industry.

Robert “Bob” Cannon, son of Millie Cannon, shared: “My family appreciates the dedication and honoring of my mother, Millie Cannon, who is well known throughout our country. Jazz is more than music. It’s history, it’s culture, it’s community. To see people travel from across the country and even around the world to celebrate in Wilmington means so much. This event grows every year, and we are so grateful.”

Attendees must bring their own chairs and blankets for a full day of live performances by celebrated local and regional jazz talent, including:

  • Breakwater
  • Richard Tucker and The Universal Koncept,
  • Hannah Blunt-Carter
  • Barbara Walker
  • Urban Guerilla Orchestra
