Wilmington, DE — As Wilmington families continue to face rising electricity costs, 2nd District Councilwoman Shané Darby is proud to announce a new partnership aimed at delivering real savings and real sustainability to local households.
Wilmington’s 2nd District has partnered with Ampion, a community solar provider delivering clean energy to the Delmarva Power grid, to help residents lower their monthly electric bills through Delaware’s Community Solar Program.
Through this initiative, both renters and homeowners in the 2nd District can subscribe to a local solar farm with no panels to install, no upfront costs, no credit check, and no fees to participate.
Qualifying low-income households can save up to 20% on their Delmarva electric bills (estimated at $336 annually). Residents who do not qualify as low-income can still save approximately 10% on their monthly electric costs.
“These are the kinds of solutions our community deserves,” said Councilwoman Shané Darby. “We are committed to helping residents enjoy the highest quality of life and that means reducing household expenses while supporting green initiatives that protect our environment for future generations.”
How Community Solar Works
The solar farms are built on underutilized farmland and will send clean, renewable energy directly to the Delmarva grid once operational, expected in Summer 2026. Subscribers will begin seeing solar credits applied to their utility bills in the Fall.
Residents enroll to receive a share of the solar energy produced and each month, solar credits automatically appear on their Delmarva bill, reducing what they owe by 10–20% of the credit value.
Participation is simple and flexible:
-
Open to renters and homeowners
-
No installation required
-
No hidden fees
-
Cancel anytime
Supporting Students Through FAME
This partnership also strengthens the community beyond energy savings. For every resident who enrolls:
-
The subscriber receives a $50 gift card
-
FAME, a local nonprofit serving 2nd District youth in grades K-12, receives a $100 donation to support STEM education with a focus on underrepresented minorities and girls.
In addition, by enrolling, residents help Delaware move closer to its goal of achieving 50% clean energy by 2035, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable future for Wilmington.
