Wilmington, DE – Wilmington City Councilman Coby Owens today welcomed the news that SEPTA will fully restore service on Sunday, September 14, 2025, reversing recent cuts to both bus/metro routes and Regional Rail lines. This restoration, approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, marks a critical win for Wilmington’s residents, commuters, and visitors.
Councilman Owens expressed his excitement about the restoration, emphasizing how this investment will directly affect the quality of life in Wilmington.
“Reliable public transit is the backbone of opportunity for our community. Whether it’s getting to work, school, medical appointments, or simply enjoying what our region has to offer, the return of these SEPTA lines means more than just trains. It means access, equity, and growth,” said Councilman Owens. “This is a win for Wilmington residents who depend on affordable, efficient, and sustainable transportation every single day.”
The restored SEPTA lines will allow Wilmingtonians to more easily connect with job opportunities across the region, support local businesses by increasing visitor access, and provide commuters with greater flexibility. The move also aligns with the city’s broader goals of reducing traffic congestion, cutting carbon emissions, and making Wilmington a leader in sustainable transportation.
Councilman Owens highlighted the community impact of this announcement:
“Residents who travel daily to Philadelphia or other points north will again have predictable service through the Wilmington/Newark Line, with stations like Claymont, Churchman’s Crossing, and Wilmington fully operational under the restored schedule,” said Councilman Coby Owens. “Our Wilmington Station, the central hub for rail service in the city, will also be served as usual under the restored schedule, allowing seamless travel to Philadelphia and beyond.”
As Wilmington continues to grow as a hub for culture, business, and innovation, the return of SEPTA service strengthens the city’s position within the region. Councilman Owens encourages residents to take advantage of the restored service starting September 14th and to view this as an opportunity to deepen Wilmington’s connections to the wider community.
Councilman Owens views this service restoration as a critical step, not a final one. “This proves what’s possible when community voices are heard, when we fight together for reliable transit,” he said. “Now the real work begins to make it permanent, make it robust, and ensuring Wilmington always has the service its people deserve.”
