Councilmember Shané Darby to Host Press Conference on Codifying Office of Community Safety

WILMINGTON, DE — Councilmember Shané Darby will host a press conference on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in the Wilmington City Council Chambers to discuss her proposed legislation codifying the Office of Community Safety within the City of Wilmington.

Members of the public and the media are invited to attend.

The proposed ordinance would codify the new Office of Community Safety within the Mayor’s Office to design, develop, and implement initiatives aimed at reducing violence through both prevention and intervention strategies. The legislation is grounded in a public health approach to violence reduction and would focus on addressing root causes by coordinating support, resources, and programming for at-risk populations, including youth.

Under the ordinance, the Office of Community Safety would be responsible for partnering with government agencies and local organizations, identifying violence hotspots through data, supporting community-based intervention efforts, working with law enforcement to prevent imminent acts of violence, and issuing annual reports to the Mayor and City Council on programs, expenditures, outcomes, and policy recommendations.

“This legislation would take a more intentional and coordinated approach to public safety in Wilmington,” said Councilmember Shané Darby. “If we are serious about reducing violence, then we also have to be serious about addressing the root causes that lead to it. The codification of an Office of Community Safety would help us better connect resources and prevention efforts in a way that supports our communities and creates a stronger path forward.”

City Council is scheduled to consider the ordinance for a third and final reading on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers.
