Councilman Coby Owens and Councilman Alexander Hackett to Host a Press Conference Featuring the 1st Annual Robert Wright III Basketball Camp
Wilmington, DE – First District Councilman Coby Owens and At-Large Councilman Alexander Hackett will host a community press conference on Saturday, August 8, 2026, to celebrate the positive stories, opportunities, and partnerships that continue to strengthen Wilmington’s neighborhoods.
The press conference will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Chase Fieldhouse, where nationally recognized Brigham Young University (BYU) college basketball standout Robert Wright III will be hosting a free youth basketball camp for Wilmington-area children and families.
The event will shine a spotlight on the importance of investing in young people and recognizing the many individuals who are making a positive difference throughout the City. While challenges often receive the most attention, Councilmen Owens and Hackett believe it is equally important to celebrate the stories of hope, mentorship, achievement, and community pride that define Wilmington every day.
“Too often, the good happening in our City goes unnoticed,” said Councilman Coby Owens. “This event is about changing that narrative by highlighting young people who are striving for excellence, mentors who are giving back, and a community that continues to show up for one another.”
Councilman Alexander Hackett added, “Wilmington is filled with talented young people, dedicated families, and community leaders who are creating opportunities every single day. This basketball clinic represents more than a day of sports. It represents leadership, inspiration, and the power of giving back to the next generation.”
Robert Wright III, one of the nation’s premier young basketball talents with Wilmington roots, is returning home to provide local youth with an opportunity to learn basketball fundamentals while encouraging them to pursue excellence both on and off the court.
“This is bigger than basketball,” said Robert Wright III. “It’s about pouring into the next generation, sharing what I’ve learned, and giving kids the same opportunities that helped shape my journey.”
Joining him will be his father, Robert Wright II, who has long been committed to serving the Wilmington community. Together, their dedication reflects the importance of family, mentorship, and investing in future generations.
The press conference will feature remarks from Councilman Owens, Councilman Hackett, Robert Wright III, and Robert Wright II, followed by the free youth basketball camp.
