Community Invited to Review Final Gateway Mural Concepts
Wilmington, DE – At-Large Councilman James Spadola is excited to share the next major milestone in the Concord Avenue/Miller Road Gateway Mural project as three completed mural concepts are now available for community review and discussion. The mural project aims to create a visually inspiring gateway into the City of Wilmington that reflects the spirit, diversity, history, and connectedness of the surrounding community.

The concepts were created by commissioned mural artist Christian Kanienberg of Wish Unlimited, whose work has transformed public spaces across the country and throughout Delaware. Each design was thoughtfully developed based on extensive public feedback gathered from more than 200 community survey responses and resident engagement meetings.
“These designs are the direct result of community voices coming together,” said Councilman Spadola. “This project is about identity, storytelling, and creating something meaningful that residents can take pride in for generations to come.”
About the Three completed Mural Concepts
Organizers are also reminding residents that the mural concepts are original copyrighted works created specifically for this initiative. The designs are protected under the agreement between the City and Wish Unlimited and are not to be copied, repurposed, reproduced, or used for other mural, print, or creative projects.
“We want residents to understand the level of thought, creativity, and professional artistry that went into these concepts,” Councilman Spadola added. “These are not AI-generated images or designs created for casual use. They are original works of art crafted specifically for Wilmington and deserve to be respected as such.”
The three concepts currently under review are identified by placeholder names for discussion purposes only and are not official titles.
“Flora”
Inspired by residents seeking a welcoming and neutral composition, “Flora” centers around the iconic Josephine Fountain surrounded by vibrant botanical elements including roses, Black-Eyed Susans, and Delaware’s state flower, the Peach Blossom. Oversized pollinators frame the design while subtle artistic details, including a hidden tribute to Bob Marley, offer deeper layers of discovery. Featuring a warm “Welcome All” message and vintage-inspired minimalist tones, the concept is designed to feel timeless, inviting, and reflective of all seasons.
“Zoo”
This bold and diversity-centered concept celebrates beloved animals from the Brandywine Zoo through dramatic oversized imagery and storytelling visuals. The Josephine Fountain anchors the composition while illuminated by a striking backlight effect. Stylized “welcome” lettering, Peach Blossom silhouettes, and subtle nods to the Lenni Lenape people are woven throughout the piece. With the warmest and most dramatic color palette of the three concepts, “Zoo” emphasizes vibrancy, movement, and cultural storytelling.
“Birds”
Designed with multiple viewing perspectives in mind, including nearby second and third-story windows, “Birds” presents colorful birds perched on connecting wires against recognizable Wilmington backdrops. The connecting strings held between the birds symbolize unity, teamwork, shared burdens, and love despite differences. The concept encourages reflection and conversation while creating an atmosphere that feels both whimsical and meaningful. A hidden tribute to Bob Marley is also included within the design’s rich sunrise and sunset-inspired palette.
The mural initiative is being led collaboratively by Councilman Spadola alongside State Representative Nnamdi Chukwuocha, State Senator Daniel Cruce, and Tina Betz of the Office of Cultural Affairs.

“This mural belongs to the community,” said Councilman Spadola. “Every conversation, every survey response, and every perspective shared has helped shape these concepts into something truly special for Wilmington.”
The projected completion date for the mural is July 4, 2026.
